Vicious little buggers!
One of our main goals at Summersville Lake was to snorkel and photograph the fish with better cameras than we had with us last year. The water was warm, so we did not need wetsuits, which seemed great at the time. That was until I was in the water, floating in place, trying to snap some photos. That’s when these little Green Sunfish thought I looked like a tasty snack. They are small and they don’t have teeth, so there are no long term effects, but it is an annoyance to say the least. Those of you who have been attacked by Damselfish know exactly what I mean. If they were the size of sharks, no one would swim in the lake!
While visibility was not the best, we had fun. Following are a few more pictures from our outings. The floatplane was not something you see every day. It motored past us twice, then went out into the main portion of the lake and took off.
Summersville Lake Retreat is one of my favorite campgrounds. Its proximity to the lake for paddling, swimming and snorkeling are a plus and it is pretty, clean and quiet. We have met some of the nicest people there, including Bill, the camp host. A few more pics from around the grounds and nearby hiking trails.
Carl in Roaring Brook
Mid-week we left Summersville and headed south to Elkin, North Carolina and Byrd’s Branch Campground. Another favorite. From here we are just a few minutes from our first stop on the Blue Ridge Snorkel Trail. We spent two days face down in the Roaring Brook at Stone Mountain. A lot chillier here (we are thankful to have our 5 mil wetsuits), but we had a blast even though the water was a bit hazy yellow. Here are just a few of the new friends we made.
