So nice to meet you . . .
face to face. A while ago I snagged a reservation for this past week at John Pennekamp State Park in Key Largo. As luck would have it, it was the same week as Reef.org’s REEF Fest. We attended their social hour on Thursday night and I was thrilled to be able to meet in person several of my heretofore online only fish geek friends. Truly awesome to be able to put real live faces with names.
REEF fest was sandwiched between two great dives in Blackwater Sound. We had really nice conditions and there was plenty to see including these slugs. They also seemed to be interested in meeting face to face.
Apparently this little (4-5” long) Whitefin Sharksucker (Echeneis neucratoides) was happy to meet me. When I got to the top of the ladder after my dive I noticed him in the inch of water puddling at my feet. He quickly slipped back into the main lagoon. I grabbed my camera and jumped back in to photograph him. After a while I lost sight of him. When I got out for the second time, he was at my feet again. I guess he latched on one more time. When I last saw him, he was heading out towards the bay. I hope he found another ride.
