Ducks in a row.

Black-bellied Whistling Ducks during the early morning in a local drainage canal.

During the dog days of summer here in Florida, birds are few and far between. These Black-bellied Whistling Ducks are one of the exceptions. I often spot these year-round inhabitants in the canals and retention ponds around the neighborhood or hear them flying over during mornings and evenings. In flight, they are easily identified by the whistling call for which they are named. You can listen here: whistling duck call courtesy of McCauley Library.

Another great place to be when the thermometer hit 98 F is underwater. So, I got up at o’dark thirty to dive Blue Heron Bridge on Friday. Here are a few of my favorite pics from the morning. Remember you can click on an image to view it full screen.
