Never stop looking up!
A while ago I made a quilt using fabric with this exact saying. This week it proved to be very true. It started during the predawn hours last Sunday when I let Koko out to pee. I caught the vague shape of something slowly climbing up the tree. I ran for my headlamp and my camera. The something was this juvenile Virginia Opossum (Didelphis virginiana) then perched high up in our oak. Just so stinkin’ cute.
Later that same morning we headed to Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge in the hope of spotting the Eastern Screech Owls nesting there. Before grabbing our gear, we hit the restroom. I was three steps out the Ladies’ Room door when this Barred Owl flew into the tree a few yards in front of me. Another dash for my camera and more looking up. I need not have rushed. He sat there for the entire time we were at the boardwalk (over an hour). Although the Screech Owls were tucked up in their nest and did not make an appearance, the Barred Owl more than made up for it. I usually don’t post multiple images of the same critter, but it is just such a beautiful bird! Remember, you can click on an image to view it full screen.
A few more images I captured this week while looking up. Although not my best photo, the Tricolored Heron just looked so goofy, bobbing up and down in the top of a tree, that I couldn’t resist:
